Transforming Growth: Crampton Consulting Group and Bentons Road Vet Clinic

Discover how Bentons Road Veterinary Clinic tackled the challenges of rapid growth with the tailored training solutions of Crampton Consulting Group. From streamlining onboarding to empowering leaders and enhancing team morale, Practice Manager Natalie Smith shares the transformative impact of CCG’s Foundation HR Package, Leadership Intelligence Program, and ProSkills Team Subscription. Learn how this partnership created a structured, supportive environment for career development and clinic success.

Bentons Road Veterinary Clinic is a well-established veterinary clinic in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula. It has been serving its local community with a unique blend of modern and holistic veterinary care for over a decade. The clinic is known for its natural approach that sits alongside traditional medicine, and it has grown steadily by expanding its services and increasing its veterinary, clinical, and support staff.

Natalie Smith is Bentons Road Vet Clinic’s practice manager, with over 30 years in the veterinary industry. She is at the helm of the clinic’s operations. Her passion for her craft and advocacy for veterinary nurses has been instrumental in guiding Bentons Road Vet Clinic through its latest growth phase.

It became essential to streamline the clinic’s onboarding, improve training processes, and support career development within the team. Natalie turned to Crampton Consulting Group (CCG) for tailored training solutions to help achieve these goals.

Challenges and Decisions to Partner with CCG

The clinic’s rapid growth presented Natalie and her team with unique challenges. Starting as a small practice with only a few staff members, Bentons Road Vet Clinic quickly scaled up, growing to a team of nearly 20. This expansion called for more structured processes to support consistent training, especially as they took on new roles and trainee nurses.

“We didn’t have a lot of processes in place for induction,” Natalie recalls. As the team continued to expand and took on trainee nurses, the need for a streamlined approach to hiring, staff competency assessment, and professional development became increasingly urgent.

Natalie had previously attended courses with the Crampton Consulting Group (CCG), which gave her firsthand knowledge of their expertise. Confident in CCG’s ability to provide practical and effective training solutions, she reached out to leverage their comprehensive Foundation HR Package.

“I knew they had some great tools that would help set our clinic up well,” Natalie shares. “They would help get processes in place to make it seamless to induct new staff.” CCG’s Foundation HR Package, with its comprehensive resources for job descriptions, selection criteria, and performance reviews, gave Bentons Road Vet Clinic the structure it needed to manage hiring and performance across its diverse team.

“I didn’t need to look anywhere else,” says Natalie. “I knew what I wanted, and I simply reached out to the CCG team. They were amazing and told me exactly what modules I needed. The beauty is that it’s tailored to the specific needs of our clinic. Everything is written down and well formulated, so it’s easy to cut and paste and remove things that aren’t appropriate and reword what we need to make it more specific to us.

Working with CCG: Customised Training and Competency Tools

Once their partnership began, CCG worked closely with Bentons Road Vet Clinic to tailor their training solutions to the clinic’s specific needs. The Foundation HR Package provided templates for job descriptions, clear role expectations, and selection criteria, which made it much easier for Natalie and her team to recruit and assess new hires.

“I started off doing it myself but soon realised, ‘why reinvent the wheel when somebody else has done it for me’,” she says. “I just purchased a package, and it was very easy to use.”

In addition to the Foundation HR Package, CCG provided Bentons Road Vet Clinic with access to the Leadership Intelligence Program for their team leaders. The program, which consisted of a six-week course, gave the clinic leaders the tools they needed to manage their roles effectively, including resolving conflict and building emotional intelligence.

“Our team leaders did the six-week Leadership Intelligence course that set them up in their leadership roles to deal with conflict,” Natalie shares. “The team really enjoyed the course content, and it gave them that little bit of extra courage to have difficult conversations.”

Natalie also praises the convenience of CCG’s ProSkills Team Subscription, which the clinic has integrated into its onboarding process. New staff undergo a 12-week induction period, during which they’re required to complete specific ProSkills courses tailored to their role and experience level.

“The ProSkills Subscription‘s a really important part of our clinic,” says Natalie, “and a major part of our induction process. We have a 12-week induction process for new staff, and there are expectations they’ll do particular ProSkills as part of that induction,” Natalie explains.

Additionally, ongoing ProSkills training points are incorporated into the clinic’s professional development reviews, which ensures that each team member completes the required training for their role.

“If we find in a staff meeting there’s a particular focus area, or if we’ve had an issue within the clinic, there’s a relevant ProSkills short course we can do,” Natalie says. “We sit down as a nursing team, watch a 45-minute recording, then chat through it, do the questions together, and use it as a team training session. It just seems to tick all the boxes,” she adds.

Results: Building a skilled, confident team

The partnership with CCG has been instrumental in transforming growth into measurable improvements at Bentons Road Vet Clinic, from streamlined hiring through to enhanced team development and morale. Some of the most impactful outcomes include:

  • Structured hiring and induction: With CCG’s Foundation HR Package, Natalie and her business manager are now equipped with clear hiring criteria and role expectations. This clarity has improved the efficiency of the hiring process and reduced time spent on training, particularly for new roles such as anaesthesia and hospital nurses.
  • Enhanced leadership skills: Through the Leadership Intelligence Program, team leaders have gained valuable skills to help them guide and support their direct reports and colleagues. Natalie notes, “The team really enjoyed the course content, and it gave them that little bit of extra courage to be able to have difficult conversations.”
  • Career development and retention: The ProSkills Team Subscription has become an essential part of the clinic’s development review process. Staff are encouraged to earn 12 ProSkills points annually, which factors into performance reviews and wage considerations. Natalie explains, “Staff can just log on and do some ProSkills. It’s always handy for if they have a difficult client at reception, for example, and they want to know how to handle it.”
  • Cost-effective training solution: Natalie regards the ProSkills Team Subscription as a worthwhile investment. “For the monthly fee, it’s a no-brainer,” she says. Having access to readily available training courses allows the clinic to adapt to changing needs and provide targeted training when necessary.

A Supportive, Ongoing Partnership

Reflecting on the before-and-after impact of working with CCG, Natalie is clear about the benefits. “It’s great because there are steps for staff to progress in their careers,” she explains.

With structured tools and support from CCG, Bentons Road Vet Clinic has improved team efficiency and created an environment where staff feel empowered to grow and learn. The ease of having all the training laid out and accessible online is invaluable. “It’s all there for you and you don’t have to think about it,” says Natalie.

The variety and depth of CCG’s resources also give the clinic flexibility and ensure the training programme remains relevant. CCG regularly updates their ProSkills library, so staff members always have new courses to pursue. This continuous learning environment helps the clinic stay aligned with industry advancements.

A recommendation for other clinics

For other clinics considering CCG’s training solutions, Natalie’s recommendation is clear: “I wouldn’t hesitate. It should be your first stop, as CCG can provide you with all these supportive tools.”

CCG’s responsive and approachable team ensures that each clinic receives personalised support that’s tailored to its unique needs. The partnership has given Bentons Road Vet Clinic the confidence to expand, secure in the knowledge that their team is equipped with the skills and support they need to provide exceptional care.
